Ometepe is an island in Lake Nicaragua formed by two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas. The name derives from the Nahuatl words ome (two) and tepetl (mountain), meaning two mountains. It’s possible to climb Concepción, an active volcano, and look inside at the steaming sulfuric gases.
