For some 500 brave souls in New York City, tonight is the night.

Athletes and devotees in the sport of international stair-racing, or tower-running, will converge this evening at the Empire State building to race to the top of its 86 flights. The current record for women is held by Andrea Mayr of Australia for running up the 1,576 stairs in 11:23 in 2006. We’ll be rooting for our American challengers to the title! And rooting for everyone who willingly goes up stairs, everywhere.

UPDATE: And the winner of the world’s oldest and most famous tower-running race is Australian Suzy Walsham, for the sixth year in a row–a record! She made it to the top in an astounding 12 minutes and 30 seconds.
